In the United States saltwater swimming pools have become extremely popular since the major introduction of the saltwater chlorine generators by the 3 main pool parts manufacturers in the early 2000s. This is for good reason, saltwater pool water is a large upgrade over regular chlorinated pool water.
Salt cells require maintenance to properly produce chlorine gas to sanitize your swimming pool. Without routine maintenance the cell will produce less and less sanitizer meaning eventually your pool will not be sanitized up to the levels it should be. It will also result in a shorter lifespan for the cell itself.
The cell creates high heat and a high PH making it a location where calcium buildup naturally occurs. To maintain the effectiveness of the cell this calcium buildup must be removed by dissolving it using acid.
Routine maintenance on a salt cell is one key to having a perfectly balanced and sanitized saltwater swimming pool.
